As a research faculty member in the Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health (IDGH) for the past 17 years, I have worked in several areas of biomedical significance. I have held the positions of lab supervisor, New England Regional Biosafety Laboratory (RBL) Scientific Manager, and currently, RBL Assistant Director.
I have had the rewarding experience of teaching basic lab skills to summer students, graduate students, veterinary students, and visiting scientists. In addition, I provide BSL-3 training (lecture and hands-on demonstrations) to new RBL users and am responsible for one of the annual RBL training modules.
Good lab managers are critical to the success of a laboratory. The demand for skilled lab managers in academics and industry continues to grow; it is projected to increase by 6% in some US cities by 2019 (Nature 2014).
I am excited to have the opportunity to provide interested students with the tools needed to be successful as a lab manager. It is rewarding to contribute to the academic and career success of future scientists and lab managers who choose to work in infectious disease and global health.
I look forward to sharing my experiences in both academics and industry in research areas including xenotransplantation, targeted toxin therapies, drug discovery, and infectious diseases.
