M.S. in Animals and Public Policy Externship Experience (MAPP)

July-August 2017

My Path to Understanding Canine Behavior through the MAPP Summer Externship Click link for Externship Presentation
Pallavi Kamath
For my MAPP summer externship opportunity, I had the privilege of working with Dr. Terri Bright, canine behaviorist and Director of Behavior Services at MSPCA-Angell, and Kim Melanson, highly experienced private dog-trainer and behavior consultant. For the last three months, I have focused on learning about canine behavior from walking and training shelter dogs, assisting with a variety of public dog training classes, and attending private consults for dogs with behavior problems. My biggest takeaway from this experience was learning how our understanding of canine behavior can help us set our dogs up for success, whether that is in the shelter or the home. The MAPP program, with its focus on human-animal relationships, has helped me prepare for my goal of improving the human-canine bond as a future dog trainer in my home country, India.

Regarding the photo above, Pallavi is with one of the shelter dogs at Baypath Humane Society in Hopkinton, MA as part of her summer externship. She’s helping shelter dogs through behavior modification, working with Kim Melanson, CPDT-KA, dog trainer and behavior consultant. This particular dog (Carrington) was just getting used to being in a public area. Here she was rewarding sit/calm behavior while they posed for the camera.
