The Northwest Atlantic Seal Research Consortium, Cape Cod, MA
This summer with the Northwest Atlantic Seal Research Consortium, I was embedded in conversations surrounding gray seal population recovery. My time was spent deepening my understanding by exploring various sides of the issues. I interviewed stakeholders to create a report, which will help move conversations forward, participated in public outreach and created a database for relevant science.
MAPP enhanced my scientific comprehension and my ability to understand various perspectives within an issue. It gave me necessary skills for conducting interviews, which allowed people to comfortably share their views.
Through my externship, I learned how many ways there are to view a topic. People’s opinions are deeply rooted, which makes navigating an issue difficult. Maintaining communication between groups is vital for creating solutions. This lesson will help me recognize where opinions stem from, which will enable me to work between, and within, groups for the benefit of animals.
