M.S. in Animals and Public Policy Externship Experience (MAPP)
Fighting for the Endangered Species Act in Washington: My Summer with the Animal Welfare Institute Click link for Externship Presentation
It was an interesting summer to be fighting for animal welfare in Washington D.C. At Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), I worked on policy issues including exotic pets, M-44’s, leg hold traps, the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and bills currently introduced in the 115th Congress. While talking with congressional staff my understanding of how bills work their way through the system was very helpful; as was having solid knowledge of existing legislation such as the ESA and AWA. Many of the writing techniques we learned in the MAPP program also came in handy as I wrote reports on best management practices for trapping, testimony on why parrots should be banned as pets in Arlington County, VA, and a letter to the editor of the Denver Post on why breeding tigers in zoos is not a conservation achievement. Animals have an uphill battle in Washington and I was proud to be working in their favor.
