M.S. in Animals and Public Policy Externship Experience (MAPP)
This summer I interned with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Field Investigations and Response team. I had the opportunity to learn about investigating and responding to cruelty and disasters impacting animals across the country. I was also introduced to the principles of the Incident Command System (ICS) and the National Incident Management System (NIMS). My experiences in the MAPP program helped prepare me for the extensive research I performed on the impact of climate change on animal response. The research methods I learned also prepared me for helping to organize and conduct surveys to assess Washington state response capabilities and national veterinary response capabilities among the fifty states. MAPP and the ASPCA have allowed me to become familiar with the national framework supporting the lifesaving efforts that go into field investigations and response and have prepared me to meet my future career goals.
